The Friends of the Attleboro Public Library

The Friends of Attleboro Public Library, Inc. has been around since August 13, 1983. Our mission today has not changed since the beginning of our group and is as follows:

The Friends of Attleboro Public Library is a non-profit organization designed to encourage community interests in library services and to support the library in providing these services.

Friends are those residents who regard the library as a vital information and cultural center and a major educational institution. Through a program of volunteer, promotional and fundraising activities, we help to acquire important materials and equipment beyond the confines of the library's regular operating budget.

We aim to inform the community of the library's resources, services and needs. The Friends have purchased library passes to various museums, e.g. Children's Museum (Boston), Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts, and Plimoth Plantation (and Mayflower II), to name a few. (We have recently added the "Ecotarium", a center for environmental exploration in Worcester, as a pass.) A detailed list can be provided to those interested in such passes at the library.

In the past year, we were able to accomplish the following:

Furnish a puppet theater and puppets for the children.
Allocate funds for display cases and media shelves for the Children's Room.
Allocate funds for an artist's rendition mural for the Children's Room.
Fulfill a request for funds for development of a "College and Career" materials center on the third floor of the library.
Purchase library cards holders (showing library logo, library telephone numbers and acknowledgement of the Friends' gift).
Help to sponsor the "Shakespeare in the Library" series, as well as the Opera series.
Adopt-a-Book program.

Our major fundraising event is our Annual Book Sale, which is held in October each year.

Corporate sponsorship is another avenue for our fundraising.
