Board Books: These books are appropriate for children from birth to about 18 months. They are bright, clear and attractive to babies, generally highlighting familiar objects with a minimum of text. Most are printed on heavy cardboard for easy handling and durability.

Other books of interest to small children, our Mother Goose and fingerplay collections, are shelved in the Parent's Collection.

Toddler Books: These books are a step up from board books, appropriate for children from 18 months to 3. They contain more text, usually with a focus on rhyme, rhythm and repetition. They are generally shorter than the average picture book, allowing for a toddler's shorter attention span. Many of these books are also appropriate for emergent readers in 1st and 2nd grade.

Picture Books: There are picture books about almost anything you can imagine here, from the fantastic to the realistic, from the past or the imagined future. Don't let the fact that these books are illustrated fool you: they range in interest level from pre-school to the upper elementary grades. Not sure which books are appropriate for your child? Ask a librarian!

Young Readers: These books are for children learning to read on their own. They range from very simple primers to beginning chapter books. Don't forget that children who can read on their own still like to be read to. We have many picture books and novels that will appeal to them.

Easy Nonfiction: This collection is for children from pre-school through second grade. Arranged in Dewey Decimal order, these books range the gamut, from biographies to dinosaurs, community helpers to poetry anthologies. .

Middle Readers: The middle reader collection is an expanding collection of fiction books geared toward children in the middle school grades. There is a wide range of books covering topics of interest to middle school children.

Spanish Books: We have a growing collection of picture books in Spanish. Some are original Spanish-language books from Spain and South America and some are translations of classic English-language picture books. We will be adding to this collection significantly.

Reference: Encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases...we can help you find almost anything in our reference collection. Reference materials may not be checked out, but you may make copies for 10 cents per page. Also, when we buy new encyclopedias, our old sets are allowed to circulate. These are shelved in the 100s in the Nonfiction section.

Fiction: These are novels or, as our young patrons call them, "chapter books." They range in reading level from 2nd to 6th grade. There is a mix of classic and contemporary titles in many genres. The paperback section contains many popular series titles, such as American Girls, Animorphs and Junie B. Jones. Many make wonderful a-chapter-a-night read-aloud books for children who are not yet reading themselves. Check "The Read-Aloud Handbook" by Jim Trelease or ask a Librarian for suggestions.

Nonfiction: Got a report due on Nicaragua? Need to know all about photosynthesis? Know a 5th grader who's obsessed with Ancient Egypt? Welcome to the Nonfiction section! Arranged according to the Dewey Decimal System, these books range in reading level from 3rd to 8th grade. And there's not just homework help to be found here! The Nonfiction section contains all sorts of fun stuff, like arts and crafts, fairy tales, pet care, sports and poetry.

Magazines: We carry many popular magazines for children, from Babybug for the under 2 set, to Muse and New Moon for middle-schoolers. We also carry magazines for parents, like Working Mother, Exceptional Child and Parents.

Audio: We have a growing collection of CDs and tapes of children's music from the classics (Ella Jenkins, Raffi) to today's favorites (Elmopalooza). We also carry a variety of picture book and tape combination packages for children, as well as unabridged children's novels recorded on tape. These are great for long car trips or for struggling readers to read along with the book.

CD-ROMS: The children's room has a growing collection of both educational and recreational CD-ROMS. The CD-ROMS circulate for one week and patrons may borrow three at a time. The collection is intended for children ages 3 and up.

Parent's Collection: Children don't come with an instruction manual. That's why we've assembled this collection of books on parenting issues from pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding right up through adolescent rebellion. We also have books for homeschoolers, pre-school teachers, day-care providers and anyone concerned with children!

Also part of this collection are picture books intended for children and parents to use together to help families deal with sensitive issues such as divorce, illness, death, sexuality and others. We are adding audio and video to this collection as well.

Videos: Looking for something for the whole family to watch? Come and see what's in the library! We have a variety of videos for children in the Children's Room. Everything form Barney and Elmo to Magic School Bus and School House Rocks.
