Net Safety Tips

1. Never give out your password. Ever. Choose a password that is easy for you to remember but not easy to guess. Remember, the one who controls the password controls everything.

2. Never give out personal information or any information that would help someone find you off-line. This includes your full name, your school, any teams you're on, where you work, or your address and phone number.

3. When choosing a screen name, avoid using your whole or parts of your name. Make sure it's easy for you to remember and don't choose one that is provocative.

4. Make sure that you have an anti-virus program and update it regularly. Not only will this keep your computer safe, it will help it run faster as well.

5. Never open an e-mail with an attachment from an address that you don't know. Never download anything from someone you don't know or from an unreliable source.

6. Always remember that people online may not be who they say they are. Never become so infatuated that you forget your better judgment. Be smart, be strong, and be in control.

7. Don't meet people in real life whom you meet on the internet. If you insist on doing so, make sure you tell someone you trust where you'll be going and with whom. Arrange the meeting in a public place that's safe. And never, ever go alone.

8. If you think that you are being harassed or stalked, never reply to the harasser. Tell an adult. It can be a parent, the head of your congregation, or another trusted grown-up. But tell someone. You don't have to face it alone.

9. The internet is an addictive invention but don't let it become your life. There's more out there. Try to maintain a healthy balance between the net and the real world.

10. Follow chat rules. Know about the chat room and how it works before entering. Know and follow proper netiquette. Avoid using offensive, vulgar, or provocative language. Don't get involved in flame matches. And whatever you do, don't feed the trolls.

11. Trust your instincts. If something makes you feel uncomfortable sign off or hit the 'back' button. You always have the power to walk away.

12. Think before you hit 'send'. Did someone's comments online leave you fuming? It's okay. Getting angry is natural. But before replying try taking a step back away from the computer. Take some time to get a snack, take a walk, or watch TV. You could even try reading. *wink* But whatever you do, give yourself some time away from the net for a while.

13. Don't believe everything that you read, hear, or see online. Make sure that virus warning you just received is real before sending it off to your friends. There are many sites online dedicated to keeping track of bogus warnings and chain letters.

14. Never buy or order anything online or give out any credit card information without asking your parents. Not only could you give important personal information to someone, you could find yourself in a sticky situation as you try to explain just why there's a $700 charge for a new XBox 360.

15. Do not use anything you find online and claim it as yours. Remember, just about everything online is owned and copyrighted by someone. Just imagine how you would feel if your work was taken without permission. If possible ask before you use. People will appreciate it.
