Dig Deeper Discovery Kits
In implementing an LSTA grant funded by the Massachusetts Board of Library
Commissioners, the Hanson Library now has in its collection a number of kits designed to make learning
fun for students in primary and intermediate levels.
The kits are each composed of books and other materials to use in exploring the focus of each subject.
Addition and Subtraction - offers different ways of learning these operations in a fun and hands-on way.
Brain Teasers - has something for all ages. The CD-Rom Clifford the Big Red Dog has easy brain teasers for young children. For older children, there are more advanced games such as Tic Tac Twice, Space Lines, Krypto and puzzles encouraging critical thinking.
Chess - provides children with instructions on playing chess.
Fractions and place value - helps children visualize fractions.
Fun with Phonics - for the beginning reader. Includes many ways to learn the basics of phonics; games, flashcards, etc.
Geosafari - this game teaches geography in an active and exciting way. Suitable for grade school children.
History of Western Music - includes 12 CDs, musical scores to the recorded music, as well as a textbook explaining the music and the times in which the music was written. Advanced level.
Hooked on Phonics, levels 1-5 - these kits contain flashcards,tapes and books for a variety of learning experiences. Level 1 is for beginners, and after completing Level 5 the student will be reading fluently.
Hooked on Math - levels 1-5 - tapes and flashcards help students learn all aspects of arithmetic, from addition to division.
Human Body - offers
fun ways of learning about the human body, including an Anatomy Apron showing
the main organs. Elementary school level.
Language Arts - offers further
development in language, such as capitalization and punctuation. Suitable
for second grade students.
Lifecycles: Butterflies, Frogs and Plants
- designed for the primary school student, the kit covers the lifecycles of
tadpoles, sunflowers, maple trees and monarch butterflies. Includes rubber
stamps, books and a magnifying glass.
Mapping skills - includes geography
card games, soft earth globes and activity books.
Massachusetts - provides games
and workbooks to help children learn facts about Massachusetts history, geography
and biography.
Master Reader - continues Hooked
on Phonics Levels 1-5, using CD-ROMs and short readings to develop and improve
reading ability. For the older grade school child.
Measurement - includes measuring
tools such as a folding ruler, a trundle wheel [to measure the area of a room],
and a balance for weighing, as well as several books that discuss the concept
of measurement in entertaining ways.
Money - teaches children the
basics of counting money. There is a cash register included as well as activities
to make the process fun.
Multiplication and division
- using a variety of games and puzzles, these operations are taught in a fun
and lively way. Grade 2 and up.
Music Theory
- includes 2 volumes of Music Ace, a music theory program, and 2 introductory
books about the history of classical music and opera.
Patterns and Shapes - suitable
for primary school children. Geofix operations, pattern blocks and a variety
of geometric solids are included.
Probability - provides an entertaining
way to understand chance and probability. For grade school children.
Reading Skills Level 1 - includes
vocabulary for both beginners and grade 1, phonics [ i.e. blends and digraphs]
and reading comprehension for grade 1.
Reading Skills Level 2 - reading comprehension and vocabulary skill building exercises are included for 2nd grade level. There is a board to use for writing exercises, magnetic words to learn parts of speech, and the game "Syl-lab-ifi-ca-tion".
Royal Treatment Theater Set - offers children a variety of puppets to dramatize fairy tales or stories from a child's imagination.
Tangrams and Pattern Blocks - encourages the grade school student to work with shapes and patterns in a fun and active way.
The USA Kit and Facts About the States - includes card games that teach U.S. geography and books that teach facts about the states. Recommended for older grade school students.
Word Games - four word games for children aged 7 and up.
Literacy Bags
for preK to Grade 2,each contains books, activity cards and puppets. Titles
