About the Hurley Library

The Captain Charles H. Hurley Library, named after a distinguished graduate, welcomes students to an outstanding collection of books, periodicals, newspapers, media, and databases. The Hurley Library now holds more than 50,000 volumes. There are a number of CD-ROM disks and workstations available for the display of such items as the Code of Federal Regulations. CD-ROM's are also available on such subjects as the environment and marine technology. There is database access to full texts of journal articles via the Internet. The Hurley Library boasts an on-line catalog through the SAILS automated system, in which over 2 million titles are available through a courier service. In addition the OCLC automated system provides the students 37.5 million items via mail.

The Hurley Library has comfortable areas in which to study or just visit with friends. Included in such areas are three student computer rooms, each containing twenty-five state-of-the-art workstations. There is also a Learning Resource Center with computer-aided assistance and tutoring by faculty and peers. This library is open 76.5 hours per week rendering ample access of its facilities to students, faculty, and staff.

Finally, there is the Ship's Library containing a reference and recreational collection that is housed on the training ship, during the annual Sea Term. This collection contains approximately 2,000 current paperback books, selected for the students' pleasure reading.

Circulation Information - General

Circulation Items: Books circulate for 28 days or 90 days. These items are subject to recall after ten days, if needed by another borrower, or immediately, if needed for reserve. (Beginning on the eighth day after notification, recalled books are fined at the rate of $1 per day when needed by another patron, and $2 when the book is recalled for reserve.)

Non-Circulating items: Periodicals, reference books, newspapers, and most media must be used in the library. With special permission, periodicals may be signed out for up to three hours during the day for the purpose of photocopying.

Renewals: All circulation items can be renewed indefinitely if not needed for Reserve or for another borrower. A renewal should be requested within a day or two of the due date, since an overdue notice is sent when a book is five days overdue.

Overdue Books and Fines: First Notice of an overdue book is sent when an item is five days overdue. Second Notice of an overdue book is sent 1 week after the first notice. There is a fine ten cents per day, to a $10.00 maximum per item.

PLEASE NOTE: ALL OVERDUE FINES WHICH ARE PAID IN PERSON PRIOR TO BILLING WILL BE REDUCED BY 50%.

If the book is still not returned within two weeks of the second notice, you will be billed for the book as though it were lost. Lost books are billed at replacement cost, processing fees, and late fines.

Suspension of Borrowing Privileges: Borrowers who have not returned overdue books and/or who have fines outstanding will have their borrowing privileges temporarily suspended until the indebtedness is satisfied.

Missing Books: Please check at the Circulation Desk for any book you cannot find in the stacks. We can tell you if the book is on reserve or checked out.

Interlibrary Loans: MMA students, faculty and staff may request from other libraries materials not owned by MMA. When such items are overdue, fines imposed by lending institutions must be paid in lieu of MMAâs fine policy. Forms requesting loans of books and journal articles are available at the Circulation Desk.

Circulation Information - Reserve Items

Reserve Materials: MMA students need an appropriate ID. Each item is available for in-house use only and can be signed out for a two hour period. Any reserve items that are allowed on an overnight loan must be returned by 9 A.M. the following morning, failure to do so will result in a fine of $1 per hour, but $.25 for the first hour. There is a maximum $10.00 fine per item. Please not the $.10 rate is a lessening of the earlier rate of $.25 per day.
