Report from the September 2007 Book Sale

This year’s Book Sale at the end of September was a great success.  When we subtract out the expenses (advertising; printing of invitations, posters, etc.; rent of the Masonic Temple; refreshments for the Friends’ Preview Night), we had a net profit of $5000.  This is, of course, thanks to the hard work of several of the Friends and the generosity of those who attended the Book Sale.  Without this kind of support, we would not be able to enrich the Library’s programs and offer the selection of museum passes.  Thank you to all who support us with their time, talents and money.  ~ Judy Lewis

Volunteer Opportunities

There are many opportunities for volunteering at the library. Ellen Casaccio, Head of Circulation, is the volunteer coordinator. Examples of the projects volunteers recently have undertaken are:

  • Shifting the collection
  • Adding book descriptions to older volumes
  • Making booklists of popular authors
  • Putting together new patron packets
  • "Shelf-reading"
  • Comparing a bibliography with our collection

If you are interested in volunteering, please call the Library to speak to Ms. Casaccio at the Circulation Desk.

Appraisal Day Saturday, April 26

at the Masonic Lodge 46 South Washington St.

10am to 3 pm

On Saturday, April 26, a representative of Skinner, Inc, one of the country's leading auction and appraisal houses, will be on had to evaluate items (up to 3) you bring in. For a fee of $25, anyone who is interested can bring up to 3 times to be examined. The appraiser will give his or her impressions of the items along with a verbal appraisal of the worth of each item. If you have more than 3 items, you can pay the $25 fee again and go through. Books and jewelry are not eligible for this event, but furniture and most other valuable items are. For pieces that are too big to carry, a good quality photography can be substituted.

Skinner is widely regarded as one of the most reputable names in the auction and appraisal business. Their representatives appear nationally on "Antiques Roadshow."

Coffee and refreshments will be available throughout the event. This is the major fundraiser that supports the museum pass program and children's and adult programming at the Library.
