- Pensions and Social Security
- A representative from the local Social Security office came to talk
about what happens to our pensions when we begin to receive Social Security.
The answers may surprise you. One of the issues is called The Government
Pension Offset (GPO). Sometimes called the Public Pension Offset, it is a
provision in Social Security law that can reduce or eliminate the Social
Security benefit for spouses, divorced spouses, and surviving spouses who
also receive a pension based on their own work for federal, state or local
government that was not covered by Social Security. The current provisions
became law in 1983. Here are some links.
