Great Websites for Kids (from Amer. Library Assoc.) Presentation on using iBistro and other Databases

Different types of research require different sources. Sometimes you may be asked to use Primary Sources (defined here by Univ. of California at Santa Cruz.) World Book Advance will have primary source material as well. Our collection includes:

  • Literature: Plot summaries, collections of criticism, author biographies and interpretation collections. You can access Contemporary Literary Criticism through the Information Resources/Databases on the iBistro site or by clicking on Databases to the left. North Attleboro residents can access Literary Reference Center which is particularly good for literary criticism and summaries. Also check out these web directories.  For Shakespeare try: Mr. Shakespeare. There is also a good site for public domain texts: The Literature Network.
  • Science: Full-text databases that include articles from Science and the Journal of American Medicine Association as well as the McGraw Hill Encyclopedia of Science print set
  • History:  Collections of speeches, historical atlases and books on specific time periods as well as full-text databases of articles and microfilm of newspapers.
  • Gale Databases now include Infotrac Kids (Elementary), Infotrac Junior (Middle School) and InfoTrac Student (High School.) These are good sources of electronic reference materials and magazine articles. They do not count as Internet sources. Instructions on using the databases from home are in the Reference and Databases section. Links to Internet sources for particular assignments will appear here during the year.

Also try World Book Online for maps, information on states and countries and much more. World Book Advanced (click on Advanced in upper right hand corner after you have typed in your barcode) has primary sources useful for high school and college assignments.
