Search Engines come in a variety of designs. Which you use depends on the kind of search you are doing.

• You know the topic, but not the details. Use a directory search engine that organizes the information for you.

  • Yahoo

  • Librarians' Index to the Internet

  • Refdesk

• You have a specific piece of information you are looking for and know the proper words (lines of a poem or name of an organization). These sites are organized by people.

  • Google

  • Answers.com

• You aren't sure about the proper words, so you need a program that can come up with suggestions.

  • Excite

  • SurfWax

• You want to do an in-depth search. These sites organize your results or give you a wide variety of places to search.

  • Query Server (especially good for money, health and government)

• You want to limit the sites you search.

  • Alltheweb

  • Altavista

• You want images or multimedia.

  • Google Image Search

  • Yahoo: Click on image tab

  • Singingfish : search for audio and video files

  • AltaVista: choose the tab "images"

  • Ask Jeeves: pulls up art if you plug in the artist's name.

  • New York Public Library has digitized their image collection. Fascinating!
